These information sheets set out safe work practices for removing non-friable asbestos.
They should be used alongside the Asbestos removal good practice guidelines
Make sure you are familiar with the general requirements for all asbestos removal as explained in these guidelines before doing any asbestos removal.
Check if an asbestos removal license is required
Up to 10m² of non-friable asbestos can be removed without a licence.
- It is not permitted to get around these requirements by dividing a large area into sectors of 10m² or less and removing asbestos from each sector.
If the removal is for more than 10m² it must be carried out by a licensed asbestos removalist.
If the removal includes any amount of friable asbestos, it must be carried out by a removalist with a Class A licence.
See section 2.2 of the Asbestos removal good practice guidelines for information on how to measure 10m², including round surfaces.
Good practices for the safe removal of non-friable asbestos
Whether a licence is required or not, asbestos removal must still meet the requirements of the Asbestos Regulations, and the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA).
This means:
- using good practices to make sure the removal of non-friable asbestos is safe
- making sure businesses have the right skills and experience to carry out the work
- making sure that the correct personal protective equipment (PPE) and respiratory protective equipment (RPE) is available and is used correctly
- making sure the removal areas are clearly signposted and separated off to prevent unauthorised people getting near it
- making sure that the removal area and all equipment is thoroughly decontaminated afterwards
- making sure that the asbestos waste is disposed of safely.
For detailed information on all of the above, see the Asbestos removal good practice guidelines
