Definition of wall switch

An electrical device which-

  1. is an air-break switch;
  2. is for connection to the wiring of an electrical installation;
  3. is primarily for mounting on a vertical surface;
  4. is manually opened and manually closed; and
  5. has a rating not exceeding 20A.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, plugs that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of plug

An electrical device which—

  1.  makes a detachable connection between the contacts of a socket-outlet and the conductors of a flexible cord;
  2. has two, three or four pins for insertion into a socket-outlet; and
  3. has a maximum rating of 20A;

but does not include—

  1. a plug which is within the scope of AS/NZS 3123 and is intended for industrial use;or
  2. a plug which is within the scope of AS/NZS 3131.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, outlet devices that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of outlet device

An electrical device which:

  1. is a household type;
  2.  as its primary function, extends supply from a socket-outlet;
  3. is portable;
  4. incorporates facilities for the insertion of a plug or plugs; and
  5. has a rating not exceeding 20A;

-but does not include

  1. a cord extension set

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, cord extension sockets that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of Cord extension socket

An electrical device which— 

  1. is for attachment to a flexible cord;
  2. has a maximum rating of 20A at low voltage; and
  3. has contacts whereby a detachable connection may be made with the corresponding pins of a plug or an inlet;

but does not include—

  1. a connector or appliance connector designated in AS/NZS 3123; or
  2. a socket-outlet designated in AS/NZS 3131. 

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, appliance connectors that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of appliance connector

An electrical device which—

  1. is for attachment to a flexible cord; and
  2. makes a detachable connection between the conductors of the cord and the pins or contacts of any low voltage appliance or equipment of a type intended or generally used for household applications;

but does not include—

  1. a connector within the scope of AS/NZS 3123; or
  2. a plug or socket-outlet within the scope of AS/NZS 3131.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, control or conditioning devices that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of control of condition device

An electrical device which—

  1.  is a household type;
  2. is for controlling or conditioning the electrical input to electrical apparatus;
  3. is portable;
  4. is self contained; and
  5. connects to supply by means of a flexible cord and plug, appliance inlet or pins for engagement with a socket-outlet.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, bayonet lamp holders that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of bayonet lamp holder

An electrical device which—

  1. accommodates a lamp with a bayonet cap of 15mm or 22mm nominal diameter;

but does not include—

  1. a lampholder which by design is restricted to specific appliances; or
  2. a lampholder which is for incorporation in industrial equipment only.

Prior to being offered for sale in New Zealand, bayonet lamp holder adaptors that are within the following definitions are subject to a Supplier Declaration of Conformity.

Definition of bayonet lamp holder adaptor

An electrical device which—

  1. is for insertion into a B22 bayonet lampholder; and
  2. is for connection to a flexible cord; or
  3. has one or more lampholders.

Definition of edison screw lamp holder

An electrical device which—

  1. accommodates a lamp with an Edison screw cap of 14mm or 27mm nominal outside diameter;

but does not include—

  1. a lampholder which by design is restricted to specific appliances; or
  2. a lampholder which is for incorporation in industrial equipment only.

Definition of socket outlet

An electrical device which— 

  1.  is for fixing at a point at which fixed wiring terminates;
  2. provides a detachable connection with the pins of a plug;
  3. has two, three, or four contacts; and
  4. has a maximum rating of 20A;

but does not include—

  1. an outlet within the scope of AS/NZS 3123 or AS/NZS 3131.

Definition of cord line switch

An electrical device which—

  1. is for attachment in a flexible cord;
  2. manually opens and closes an electrical circuit; and
  3. has a rating not exceeding 16A at low voltage; but does not include—(d) bell push and pendant switches. 

Definition of touch dimmer

A device which is an electronically operated switch for direct or indirect operation of lamp circuits or the speed of motors and which utilises direct or indirect contact of a person with live parts for its operation.

Definition of residual current device (RCD)

An electrical device which—

  1. isolates or initiates a tripping signal to isolate a low voltage supply to protected circuits, socket-outlets or equipment in the event of a current flow to earth which exceeds a predetermined level;
  2. may be fixed or portable;
  3. has a rated residual current not exceeding 300mA for devices intended for connection to fixed wiring or 30mA for other devices; and
  4. has a rated load current not exceeding 125A for devices intended for connection to fixed wiring or 20A for other devices;

but does not include—

  1. a device intended to be used with a particular circuit breaker other than a miniature overcurrent circuit-breaker; or
  2. a device intended to protect an electricity supply authority distribution system; or
  3. a device covered by AS 2081 and intended for mines use.

Definition of miniature over current circuit breaker

An electrical device which—

  1. is an enclosed air-break switch;
  2. opens a low voltage circuit automatically under predetermined conditions of overcurrent;
  3. has a nominal rating not exceeding 125A; and has—
    1. a current breaking capacity up to but not including 10kA; and/or
    2. a projected panel mounting area not exceeding 4000mm2 per pole; 
      but does not include—
  1. miniature overcurrent circuit breakers as defined but which are intended and marked as being only for use in industrial application.
