WorkSafe maintains a series of records of cylinders containing gases under pressure and of parties involved in the inspection and testing of gas cylinders.

Cylinder design standards

New cylinders must be designed and manufactured to a WorkSafe approved design standard:

Do not use withdrawn standards for new cylinder designs.

Approved cylinders

Cylinders approved for use, filling and testing in New Zealand are either:

  • New cylinders manufactured to an approved design, or
  • New cylinders cleared as UN cylinders and stamped in keeping with UN cylinder marking requirements (note: there is no record for UN cylinders), or
  • Small numbers of cylinders for specialised use given a WorkSafe exemption as a special cylinder.

Cylinder fittings standards and designs

New fittings must be designed and manufactured to an approved cylinder fitting standard. LPG cylinder fittings of a type imported for the first time, must be cleared by a compliance certifier as compliance with the design and marking requirements and given a WorkSafe register number:

Recognised inspection agencies for cylinders

All cylinders imported into New Zealand must be inspected at the time of manufacture by an approved inspection agency listed on this register:

Do not use a withdrawn agency on this list for inspecting new cylinders.
