Avian influenza, or bird flu, may create health and safety risks for workers who come into contact with infected birds or animals, contaminated materials, or affected environments.

Businesses must manage these risks by identifying possible exposure, assessing the risk, and putting effective controls in place.

WorkSafe reminds businesses to follow relevant health and safety guidance, review their work activities and controls, and keep workers informed. We have supported the development of workplace health advice provided by Health New Zealand. Biosecurity information, including reporting sick or dead birds, is provided by the Ministry for Primary Industries.
