Our permit function helps manage health and safety risks in regulated work and activities. It involves:

  • authorising and registering businesses and individuals to use, supply, or perform certain high-risk work (such as asbestos removal) and sell or supply electrical and gas equipment
  • authorising and registering businesses and individuals to use specific equipment, such as amusement devices and pressure equipment, cranes, and passenger ropeways (PECPR)
  • exempting  people or duty holders from certain legal requirements, such as exemptions under the Health and Safety at Work Act
  • monitoring the performance and compliance of duty holders who are authorised to perform certain high-risk work, and taking action when required. For example, compliance certifiers.

A duty holder is someone who has specific obligations under the law to manage workplace health and safety.

We oversee thousands of applications a year – at any given time, there’s well over 10,000 people, activities, and pieces of equipment permitted by WorkSafe.

There are 15 regimes where we consider the work to be high risk, and businesses or individuals must be authorised:
