If you are an individual or business doing high-risk work, you will need to apply to us for an authorisation or exemption. You must provide information about the work you plan to do.
When an application is lodged, we will assess each application against specific criteria for each regime. We follow a standard process which ensures we're making consistent decisions.
The application process
Inform
The information on our website helps people and businesses understand if an authorisation or exception is required.
It includes when you need to apply, and how the permit application process works.
Find the application forms and guidance on how to complete them
Apply
Submit the application form and all supporting information that is needed.
You will receive an email confirming your application and how long the process is likely to take.
You can contact us to discuss making changes to your application, to withdraw it, or if you have any questions.
Review
We will review the application first, to ensure the required information is included to be considered complete.
An application is complete when:
- all mandatory fields on the application form provided are completed
- required information/materials are provided
- applicant details are complete and correct
- documentation is properly signed (and/or notarised), and
- payment has been processed (if applicable).
We will contact you if any of the required information is missing. You have 20 working days from the date of the request to provide the missing information. If we do not hear from you within this timeframe, the application will be taken as withdrawn or may be refused.
If all required information is provided, the application will be considered complete. We will let you know when we begin assessing your application.
Assess
We will assess the application, and all the required information provided, against our criteria.
If additional information is needed to complete the assessment, we will contact you. You have 20 working days to provide the requested information for the assessment to continue.
If you do not provide the information in time, we will continue processing the application with the material we already have. This may result in the application being refused.
The time to complete the assessment will vary depending on the type of application submitted.
If required, we will contact you to discuss any proposed conditions that will be applied to an authorisation or exemption.
Decide
Once we have assessed the application, we will decide whether to grant the authorisation or exemption with or without conditions, or refuse the application.
Notify and issue
We will notify you of the decision. If we grant an authorisation or exemption, we will send you the permission documentation. It will include the period for which the permission is granted for and a list of any conditions you must meet.
Monitor
Once you are authorised, we will regularly monitor your performance to ensure you are meeting the regulatory obligations associated with your approval.
