Why we are here?

Petroleum is an industry sector that has inherent and significant hazards. Failure doesn’t happen often, but when it does – the consequences can be catastrophic.

The Health and Safety at Work (Petroleum Exploration and Extraction) Regulations 2016 came into force on 4 April 2016. WorkSafe are developing guidelines on a number of issues included in the regulations which will be published on our website.

To be notified about new guidance and safety alerts - please sign up for petroleum updates here.

WorkSafe’s High Hazards Unit (HHU) petroleum inspectorate has the inspection and enforcement role, and the team is focussing predominantly on the process safety systems supporting workplace practice.
