Electricity can be particularly dangerous in extreme conditions like underground mines and tunnels. This means it is covered by two sets of regulations. Mine owners and operators need to be aware of how they are covered by these regulations to ensure worker safety.

We have produced interpretive guidelines for mining operators.

This guide explains the regulatory requirements associated with the control of electricity in underground mines and tunnels, in particular the relationship between the Health and Safety in Employment (Mining Operations and Quarrying Operations) Regulations 2013 and the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010.

While this guidance has not been updated to reflect current work health and safety legislation (the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 and regulations), it may still contain relevant information and practices to keep workers and others healthy and safe.

Please read this guidance in conjunction with all relevant industry standards that apply to you as a PCBU. This guidance will be progressively reviewed and either updated, replaced with other guidance, or revoked.
